We went on a day trip to downtown and uptown Naples this week and had such a great time! It’s been so much fun getting out into the city and mingling with the locals. Danny tries to speak Italian to everyone… He doesn’t mind them correcting him. I’m still a little embarrassed to try. I guess I’m just afraid I’ll mess up and panic that I stated something I can’t finish, haha! There’s a google translate app that has been a life saver for us several times. Like when we were trying to see if the LUSH ladies had a certain bar soap – type in a phrase quick, get it translated and ask! Hey, I’ll take it when I’m in a pinch!
The architecture is so gorgeous here – its one of my favorite parts of this city. There is just so much history in these bricks and cobblestones. I love that new and old is mixed here – you see everywhere. Roman ruins are so common you hardly notice them after awhile. It’s just so amazing.
For the most part, Neapolitans are laid back, love to hang out and talk and are OBSESSED with babies. Men and women alike! It’s so precious how they just love on Duke – we hear the same phrases from everyone when they see him, “Mama mia! Ah, Bella, bella!” Then they point to his cheeks, “Grande!” It’s hilarious! He just eats up the attention, too. When we are out and about, he is silent (for the most part!) and looking everywhere – then if he catches someone’s eye, it’s just the biggest smile he can muster, haha! Such a ham.
Eating out in town has been so much easier than I thought! Ordering is super easy, and if you’re ever unsure of something – whip out your google translate app and you’re good to go! The pizza here…. no words can describe. The cheese is just, just phenomenal. It’s mozzarella made from fresh buffalo milk. And the sauce, olive oil, fresh basil…. okay, I think it’s time for dinner again!! We’ve decided we’re totally okay with pasta and pizza everyday for the next three years.
Speaking of which, it’s so fun to be cooking again! I’m going to take Italian cooking classes and can’t wait to learn their secrets. We had dinner at some friends tonight and he made a pasta dish he learned from a local – HEAVEN! I don’t know if it’s the meat they use or the fresh tomatoes or what their secret is, but it’s nothing like “American Italian”, let me tell you! It’s so fresh. When I do my first cooking class, I may just share the recipe on here… you’ll have to check back! 😉
